It’s rare to see a home that fits so perfectly in its surroundings. This residence, created through a collaborative process involving Hobin Architecture, 2H Interior Design and their clients, feels like a natural extension of the setting.

The site, in the Peterborough Highlands, was chosen for its panoramic views of the sky. And the outcome—a remarkably serene rural retreat— offers an immersive connection to the sky, land and horizon.

Its design evolved from observing the lay of the land—how farmhouses, barns and granaries are naturally grouped in the countryside. These clusters served as impetus for a striking, pavilion-like dwelling of interconnected spaces that feels both modern and imbedded in local heritage.

Along with the cluster-inspired form, emphasis on transparency, sky-focused design, material authenticity and year-round outdoor connection carried through from early exploratory conceptual work to final detailing. That effort shows. There’s a Latin term, genius loci, for what has been captured here: the spirit of the place.

In terms of lifestyle, there’s a sense of calm thanks to an abundance of natural light, sky views in every direction, a farmhouse aesthetic and clear zoning of private and public spaces.  Arranged to support family life with young children, these distinct areas also facilitate creativity and retreat.

Materials, including stone, wood, metal roofing and black steel window frames, draw from both the vernacular of barns and the details of modern architecture, while separate areas are connected by glass passages to maintain lightness and openness.

Standout features include an outdoor room, enclosed with sliding glass panels, that offers views in three directions and a study/music room that can open or close to suit the moment.

Now that the home is complete, the clients most appreciate its serenity. Transparency—via floor-to-ceiling windows, glass links between wings and carefully aligned sightlines—brings nature and sky into every room. Thoughtful division of spaces allows for both gathering and alone time. And the year-round outdoor room has become a favourite spot, allowing this family to enjoy the setting and panoramic views in all seasons. hobinarc.com; 2hinteriordesign.com.
